English Colombian cardinal says president should not seek third straight term
Oct 28, 2008

BOGOTA, Colombia (CNS) -- Cardinal Pedro Rubiano Saenz of Bogota said popular conservative President Alvaro Uribe should not run for re-election in 2010. "I believe that it is important for the nation that there be renewal," Cardinal Rubiano said in an interview published Oct. 26 in El Tiempo, the nation's largest newspaper. "Mr. Uribe has served the country with total dedication and has accomplished very good things. (But) a democracy requires that there be another president." Uribe, a conservative and close ally of the United States, has governed for two terms and continues to enjoy popularity ratings of about 80 percent, in large part because of progress against Marxist rebels who have been battling to unseat the government for more than four decades. Uribe's supporters already amended the Colombian Constitution once in order to permit him to succeed himself in 2006, when he was re-elected by a wide margin. This year, Uribe supporters have collected millions of signatures backing another constitutional amendment, but Uribe has not said whether or not he supports the initiative.
