Honduran cardinal condemns Mexico-US border fence, compares it to Berlin Wall
May 15, 2008
Honduran Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez is condemning the border fence being built along the U.S.-Mexican border.
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP, 2008-05-09) - Rodriguez compared the fence to the Berlin Wall and said it would not keep Mexican and Central American migrants from crossing into the United States.
The Roman Catholic cardinal said it was sad that trade agreements were opening borders to the free passage of goods but not of people.
He spoke Thursday during a closed-door conference on immigration for officials of the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America. The church released his comments Friday.
The U.S. is seeking to build 670 miles (1,000 kilometers) of fence along the southwest border by the end of the year.
