English CJC, QR participates in historic interfaith dialoge with Cardinal Marc Ouellet
Mar 04, 2006
As part of its mission to further interfaith dialogue, Canadian Jewish Congress, Quebec Region representatives and members of Quebec City’s Jewish community met this week with Cardinal Marc Ouellet at his residence in Quebec City.

MONTREAL – (cjc.ca, March 1, 2006) - “This meeting illustrates how far relations between Christian and Jews have progressed since the proclamation of Nostra Aetate over 40 years ago,” said CJC,QR President Jeffrey Boro, who led the delegation with CJC National Executive Chair Dr. Victor Goldbloom and Rabbi Leigh Lerner of Montreal’s Temple Emanu-El Beth Sholom. Israeli Consul General Marc Attali joined the delegation and was one of the featured speakers.

“I personally could not have envisioned such a meeting taking place in my youth,” Boro said. “Cardinal Ouellet is to be commended for having initiated this remarkable encounter between representatives of our respective faiths and we express our gratitude to him and the Archdiocese of Quebec City for the gracious reception we received. We look forward to continuing this dialogue well into the future,” he added. Cardinal Ouellet’s invitation to the Jewish community follows recent worldwide celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and the extraordinary document it published, Nostra Aetate. The document became the turning point in modern Catholic-Jewish relations.

“Few Vatican documents have received such sustained attention and so many commemorative events and conferences,” said Dr. Goldbloom, noting that the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops chose to publish a major statement on Catholic-Jewish relations as their Jubilee document in 2000, the Jubilee Year in the Catholic calendar.
