Cardinal hails Bush ‘victory for morality’
Nov 11, 2004
The most senior Roman Catholic in Scotland has pointed out yesterday to George W Bush's election win as a victory for morality and saying politicians should look to America as an example.
(The Herald Nov. 08 2004) Citing the high priority of moral values in last week's US presidential election – where 22% of Americans said this was their main reason for voting – Cardinal Keith O'Brien said Scots politicians were failing to reflect the morality of the wider population and called on the Scottish Executive to support abstinence-based approaches.
"Our own politicians would do well to cast their eyes across the Atlantic," he said.
In a sermon in Edinburgh, Cardinal O'Brien said: "We are in danger of denying our young people the guidance and the tools they need to be able to make sound moral judgments about how they behave."
