English Cardinal endorses Scotland independence
Nov 01, 2006
The head of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland suggested in an interview that independence would be good for the country.

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Cardinal Keith O'Brien said in an interview with the Catholic Herald the decision should be up to the people of Scotland. But he told The Scotsman that in Ireland and Denmark he has seen "the prosperity that self-determination can bring."

The Scottish National Party, which supports complete independence, hopes to win an election to the Scottish Parliament next May with a proposal for a referendum before 2010. Scotland and England became united under one king when James VI of Scotland succeeded Queen Elizabeth I in 1603, and agreed to full union a century later.
