English Nicaraguan President Urged to Avert Crisis
Jul 09, 2005
Cardinal Miguel Obando Bravo has urged Nicaraguan President Enrique Bolaños to resume dialogue and be flexible to solve this country´s governability crisis.

Managua, Jul 3 (Prensa Latina) In remarks to a local TV network on Sunday, Miguel Obando, a guarantor in the talks, admitted that this political issue is increasingly dangerous and "the current situation is very delicate."

He confirmed that he sent a letter to Bolaños conveying suggestions made by the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and the Liberal Constitutionalist Party (PLC) in order to break the crisis.

He commented that both initiatives shared common elements and their sponsors were ready to yield as long as the President or his representative joins the three-party talks at the Catholic University.

The Cardinal said that talks cannot progress unless "parties show understanding and flexibility" while they think on ways to make the country move forward amid the crisis for disagreements between the State powers.

"I hope the Divine Spirit enlightens his (Bolaños´) mind to find a way out of this very complex situation we are facing," he said.

The chief Executive has refused to go to the negotiation table claiming that Constitution ammendments approved by the National Assembly are illegal as ruled by the Central American Court of Justice (CACJ).

Such a ruling has been termed inadmissible by Nicaragua´s Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) and the single-chamber Congress.
