English States Dinner Remarks

States Dinner Remarks, Tuesday, Aug. 3 2004 at the Knights of Columbus

Dear Knights of Columbus
Dear Friends,

Such meetings as tonight give us an occasion to express our human solidarity and our openness to Christian values.

As Knights of Columbus you demonstrate the beauty of human solidarity in your help to the people in need and in your commitment to Christian charity.  Today your attitude becomes more important than ever.  In our global world we need universal human values.  To be a Catholic means to reveal in our life the universal values proclaimed by Jesus Christ.  It is He who sends us to the divided world to make his disciples of all nations by our commitment to truth and love.

At the end of the fifteenth century, when Columbus arrived to this country, he discovered The New World unknown to Europe before.  Today, you, as Knights of Columbus, are sent to direct the attention of the contemporary society to the new world of spiritual values, so often unknown to many modern people.

Let us remember the papal words:  "Do not be afraid, open your doors to Christ" – proclaimed at the beginning of his service to the universal Church by John Paul II, my predecessor as bishop of Kraków.

You are not afraid.  Your doors as well as your hearts are open.  I would like to thank you for all expressions of your dedication to the Church and your deep sense of Christian brotherhood.  Our Christian hope is strengthened when we find brothers who, in spiritual unity with The Holy Father, try to proclaim in their life the Christian message of hope.

There are many people who are ready to sing rather Requiem than Magnificat.  It is easy to be a pessimist when facing many painful phenomena of our time.  For this reason we need such community meetings as tonight, to share our optimism and to remember that the Almighty has done great things for us, His mercy and love are with us at the threshold of the third millennium. May His blessing inspire all of us in expression of our Christian solidarity.  May Columbus' route unite you in your building the new world of Christian hope.

God bless you all.
