English Alexy II appreciates worldwide reputation of Cardinal Lustiger
Aug 09, 2007
Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia has condoled on the occasion of the death of the prominent French Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger.

Moscow, August 8, Interfax - ‘The whole long life of this outstanding hierarch of the Roman Catholic Church was marked by pastoral openness to people, hard thinking and readiness to hold dialogue with people of other faiths and convictions.,’ the patriarch said in his letter to the archbishop of Paris Monsignor Andre Vingt-Trois.

‘The now late deservingly gained respect in France and the whole world,’ Alexy II said.

‘I am asking you to pass assurances of support and my prayers for the soul of the now late to everyone who knew and loved him,’ he said in the letter published on the Moscow Patriarchate’s official website on Wednesday.

Cardinal Lustiger was 80 when he died last Sunday.

Lustiger was born Aaron Lustiger in Paris on September 17, 1926. His mother, a Jew of Polish origin, died in Auschwitz concentration camp in 1942.

As a teenager, Aaron converted to the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Archbishop of Paris during 24 years (1981-2005) before retiring in the age of 78.

About one month ago the critically sick Cardinal Lustiger publicly said that he was approaching the end of his earthly life.
