English Against Sensationalizing Anti-Semitic Campaign
Oct 04, 2004
Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger of Paris has asked the world's media not to give undue prominence to the anti-Semitic graffiti discovered in the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris.

Paris, Aug. 16 (CWNews.com, Aug. 16 2004) - Cardinal Lustiger, who is himself a convert from Judaism, was responding to the discovery of slogans such as "Death to Jews" and swastikas scrawled on the wall of the cathedral in Paris. The cardinal condemned the messages, while urging reporters not to "draw unjustified conclusions, or create an unreasonable panic." Although it was appalling, he observed, the graffiti on in the cathedral was certainly the work of a few disturbed individuals, rather than an indication of any major social trend.

"If a graffiti campaign is enough to destabilize the republic, then civil order really is in danger," the French cardinal said.

In fact, he suggested, the people responsible for the graffiti are marginal groups, seeking to cause a sensation. "In order for reason to triumph, we have to see things as they are," the cardinal said.
