English CDF document no problem for ecumenical work
Jul 14, 2007
The head of the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity has called for calm in reactions to the recent Vatican document explaining the central role of the Catholic Church.

Vatican, Jul. 13, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Cardinal Walter Kasper (bio - news) said that the document released on July 10 by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) should not pose any new obstacles for ecumenical work, despite some outcries from Protestant leaders-- who objected to the Vatican statement that the Reformation communities do not qualify as churches in the proper sense because they have not preserved the Eucharist and the apostolic succession.

"Dialogue demands clarity," Cardinal Kasper said during a Vatican Radio appearance. He observed that "our Protestant partners recently demanded clarification of the boundaries of ecumenism." The CDF document, he said, would help to clarify the Catholic teaching and thus provide sharper focus for ecumenical discussions.

In a related development Archbishop Bruno Forte of Chieti-Vasto, Italy, a prominent member of the International Theological Commission, also argued against an alarmist reaction to recent Vatican documents. Bishop Forte strongly denied the notion that the CDF document and the papal motu proprio restoring broad access to the Latin Mass should be seen as an "anti-Vatican II offensive."
