(CWR, Sep. 27, 2001) VATICAN CITY — In the consistory of the year 2000, the largest consistory ever held at the Vatican, more than 150 cardinals sat down to identify pastoral challenges and possible solutions at the start of the third millennium.

During the consistory cardinal Francisco Alvarez Martínez of Toledo, Spain, made the observation that at the beginning of the 20th century, the key questions of social justice were the dignity of labor and the rights of workers; today, the Spanish prelate continued, the key questions involve the dignity of marriage and the integrity of the family.
