Cardinal Etsou-Nzabi-Bamungwabi is the second cardinal to come from Zaire. He was born on December 3, 1930, in Mazalonga, Lisala diocese, and ordained on July 13, 1958.

After serving first as President of the Kinshasha Province, and then as Vice-President of the Zaire Assembly of Major Seminary Superiors, he was named on July 8, 1976 Archbishop of Menefessi, and consecrated by Cardinal Malula on November 7 of the same year.

On November 11, 1977, he became titular Archbishop of Mbandaka-Bikoro and was transferred to Kinshasa on July 7, 1990. Immediately afterwards he was elected Vice-President of the Zaire Episcopal Conference (CEZ).

On June 28, 1991, John Paul II elevated him to the cardinalate.
