"21st-century socialism needs to be defined"

Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino Thursday reasserted that the Venezuelan Catholic Church is not involved "in any political plot against President Hugo Chávez' government."

(el universal, August 02 , 2007) In an interview with official television channel VTV, the Caracas Archbishop stressed that the Catholic Church has a strong commitment to "protect the efficient running of the country" and reject any political system that does not abide by democracy.

"We are concerned about some issues likely to have a negative impact on the country, including the definition of the so-called 21st-century socialism. There is a number of signals suggesting it is taking the path of the totalitarian state-centered Marxist socialism. If so, we would not agree with it. Otherwise, the terms need to be defined."

Cardinal Urosa clarified that if President Chávez' socialism is "a democratic socialism where the State is not omnipresent and does not dictate the behavior of all citizens," the Catholic Church could agree with it. The Catholic Church, he underscored, would definitely reject "Marxism socialism that ultimately ruins the countries where it is implemented."
