Cardinal Urosa wants the government to embark upon political agreement

Caracas archbishop Jorge Cardinal Urosa Savino has insisted on the need for political agreement among domestic sectors ahead of the elections for president, and the government should lead this initiative.

(El Universal, March 13 , 2006) "They have submitted to me their points of view and I personally believe that this is important, as I have said many times. All the domestic political sectors ought to come to terms. Therefore, those people who think that nowadays there is lack of conditions for the elections next December, could feel that the way has been paved for open, truly democratic elections," Sabino explained.

"Government forces, who have the power in the National Assembly (AN) are to play the most significant role," he emphasized.

"They need to fulfill the demands set forth in the laws. In this way, all Venezuelans will feel that they have full freedom to cast their ballots in December of this current year."

Urosa Savino met Monday with a delegation of opposition Comando de la Resistencia, who voiced concern about the voting system.

He recalled that the Catholic Church would insist on furthering dialogue among different groups, but a democratic solution to ongoing differences is most important.
