English Cardinal Cé turns 80; 114 cardinal-electors remain
Jul 15, 2005
Cardinal Marco Cé, the former Patriarch of Venice, marks his 80th birthday today, and therefore becomes ineligible to vote in a papal conclave.

Rome, Jul. 08 (CWNews.com) - Born in Izano, in Italian diocese of Crema, Cardinal Cé was ordained in 1948. After teaching in the Crema seminary, he became an auxiliary bishop of Bologna in 1976, and two years later was appointed Patriarch of Venice, succeeding Cardinal Albino Luciani, who had been elected as Pope John Paul I. He was named to the College of Cardinals in 1979 by Pope John Paul II, and retired from his pastoral assignment in 2002. He has been replaced in Venice by Cardinal Angelo Scola.

With the Italian prelate's 80th birthday, there are now 114 cardinal-electors. The recent death of Cardinal Jaime Sin, on June 21, left 181 members of the College of Cardinals.
