English Ones to watch: Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos
Apr 14, 2005
Aged 72, he was secretary of the Latin American Bishops' Council (CELAM) from 1983 to 1987 and its president from 1987-91. Pope John Paul named him to head the Congregation for the Clergy in 1996 and he became a cardinal in 1998.

(From: The Sunday Business Post, January 06, 2002) At the European bishops' synod, he insisted that today's priest must be a "man of the Church" who can combat "antihierarchical" tendencies in contemporary Catholicism. Castrillon Hoyos is renowned for being willing to go anywhere and speak to anyone.

On one occasion in Rome, he decided to look in on the Vatican press room. After saying a few words to the press corps, all the journalists stood and cheered.

Recently he has been named to oversee the peaceful restoration of the Tridentine Mass. Re may have chosen him for this almost impossible task to lessen his chances against Tettamanzi.
