English President’s Medal from The Catholic University of America
Oct 16, 2004
Remarks by the Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M., President of The Catholic University of America on presenting the President’s Medal to Archbishop Agostino Cacciavillan Apostolic Pro-nuncio to the United States, November 16, 1998.

One of the real privileges that I have as President of The Catholic University of America is the opportunity to recognize and to honor those people who, by the content of their character and the witness of their lives, share the vision and exemplify the ideals of our university. This evening, in the presence of the hierarchy of this nation, I would like to ask Archbishop Agostino Cacciavillan, to join me at the podium.

Archbishop Cacciavillan, you have been the representative of the Holy Father to the United States since 1990, a service and a ministry that you have performed with much love and dedication. On countless occasions you have been the sign of the Holy Father’s presence on our campus. We count ourselves doubly blessed insofar as you are not only Pope John Paul II’s representative as the Apostolic Pro-nuncio and Vatican Ambassador to the United States but you are also our neighbor here in Washington and our very dear friend.

The Catholic University of America could not begin to adequately express the profound gratitude that is shared by so many in our country for your priestly zeal and devotion to the diplomatic service of the Church, traits for which this university admires you greatly.

And so,with a full heart, much affection and deep appreciation, it is my honor as President of The Catholic University of America to present you with the President’s Medal, as you return to Rome to assume you new responsibilities as President of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See.

May God bless you.
