English Ones to watch: Giacomo Biffi
Apr 14, 2005

The Archbishop of Bologna and conservative counterpart to Martini, is regarded as sincere and intelligent, but not necessarily discreet. On one occasion, he was said to have described journalists as "vermin", which won't have improved his chances with the media.

(From: The Sunday Business Post, January 06, 2002) Aged 72, Biffi is the leading episcopal opponent of Muslim immigration into Italy and has good relations with the right-wing Berlusconi government.

His denunciations of feminism, pacifism and gay rights have won him support in the Curia, but his reported suggestion that the Church should be "exceedingly rich" is unlikely to have gone down well with Third World cardinals.
