English Italian Cardinal Caprio dead at 90
Oct 17, 2005
Cardinal Giuseppe Caprio, the former president of the prefecture for Econmic Affairs of the Holy See, died on October 15, just days short of his 91st birthday.

Vatican, Oct. 17 (CWNews.com) - In a telegram of condolence to a niece of the deceased Italian prelate, Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) praised Cardinal Caprio for his "faithful and generous service to the Church and the Holy See." He recalled that Cardinal Caprio, who had served in the Vatican diplomatic corps for more than 40 years, had been a "zealous collaborator of give Popes."

Cardinal Caprio had served as apostolic nuncio in India and China, and was the cardinal-deacon of the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, and grand master emeritus of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Pope Benedict will preside at a funeral Mass for the deceased cardinal in the Vatican basilica on October 18. The Italian prelate's death leaves the College of Cardinals with 180 members, of whom 112 are below the age of 80 and thus eligible to vote in a papal conclave. On October 23, Cardinal José Falcao Freire, the former Archbishop of Brasilia, Brazil, will also turn 80, and thus drop from the list of eligible cardinal-electors.
