Palermo celebrates 40 yrs of Cardinal Pappalardo

Palermo is celebrating 40 years under bishop Salvatore Pappalardo. The anniversary was marked by special mass in Palermo's cathedral and by the Pope's personal writing salute.
(AGI) - Palermo, Italy, Jan 16 2006 - "The Pope - reads Vatican communique' - is present in spirit to mark this 40th anniversary". The Pope also submitted Pappalardo his "best wishes and joins the entire church of Palermo in thanking the Lord for his bestowal on the city of such a zealous bishop". Ratzinger's address also solicited the bishop's "Divine consolation" and "imparted" his "special apostolic blessing, extended to bishops Salvatore De Giorgi, the church in Sicilya at large, parishioners and all those having received holy sacraments present at the ceremony". Bishop De Giorgi followed up on the Pope's special apostolic blessing and described Pappalardo's curriculum: "we should not forget that in forty years, after a stint of five in the Vatican, he served a subsequent 26 purely devoted to charity". Vatican Nuntio Paolo Romeo also attended the ceremony.
