English Cardinal Declines to Retire in Britain
Jan 07, 2005
Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala has turned down an offer to retire in England.

(New Vision, January 6, 2005 ) Kampala - In a special edition of Catholic News Report, to mark a decade as Cardinal, Wamala said he preferred to retire within Uganda.

"When the Holy Father permits me to retire, I will retire in Uganda although my friends in Britain had asked me to spend my retirement with them," Wamala told the magazine.

Wamala ruled out the rejuvenation of Munno, a Catholic Church newspaper that collapsed in 1996.He asked Catholics to support the Catholic News Report and Leadership Magazine.

He said it was unfair to tax private schools, adding that they offered a good service to the public.

The Catholic Church owns many educational institutions but they are treated as private and taxed.

On the much-publicised Mapeera House, a Catholic Church project of erecting a multi-million commercial complex, Wamala said once Centenary Rural Development Bank gets a nod from the Central Bank, the project would start.

Emmanuel Wamala was installed as Cardinal in 1994. Last last year, he marked 10 years of service.
