Cardinal Wamala Opens Parish

August 17, 2004

Cyprian Musoke

Kampala

CARDINAL Emmanuel Wamala has created a new parish in Bunamwaya, incorporating five sub-parishes of the Catholic Church.

Officiating at the inauguration of St. Gyaviira Catholic Parish on Saturday, Wamala, who also wed three couples, said, "For a long time, the people here have been asking me for a parish, because of the exploding number of laity, making the administration of sacraments difficult."

The new parish will incorporate Lufuka, Kitebi, Kigula, Nfuufu and Ngobe sub-parishes, all in Bunamwaya, a Kampala suburb.

The Rev. Father Atanasius Musajj-akaawa, heads the new parish.

Handing over the parish to Musajjakaawa, Wamala said, "This day must be rejoiced because a new child in the form of a parish has been born unto us."

He lashed out at priests  who lock churches for fear of thieves, saying this prevents Christians from confessing when they want.

Wamala said thieves cannot steal from a church when people are praying.
