English Ones to watch: Dionigi Tettamanzi
Apr 14, 2005
Aged 67, he was ordained in 1957 and appointed Archbishop of Genoa in 1995. He became vice president of the Italian bishops' conference the following month and was named cardinal in 1998.

(From: The Sunday Business Post, January 06, 2002) He is a close friend of Giovanni Battista Re, who will be one of the most powerful men in the next conclave. An expert in moral theology -- one of Pope John Paul's main areas of expertise -- Tettamanzi is regarded as a conservative.

If the Italian cardinals are divided between Martini and Cardinal Camillo Ruini (vicar of Rome and head of the Italian bishops' conference), they might settle on Tettamanzi. Tettamanzi is also close to Opus Dei and has compared its founder, Blessed Jose Maria Escriva, to Saints Benedict and Francis of Assisi.
