In an exclusive interview on Thursday, May 13, 2004, one of the leading American cardinals in Rome spoke out against the "hypocrisy" of US government reaction to revelations of torture of prisoners in Iraq

Cardinal James Francis Stafford, a top American cardinal at the Vatican, said US President George Bush and the US Congress leant tacit approval to the torture of Iraqi prisoners by remaining silent when the issue was raised in 2001.

Citing articles in Newsweek, the Washington Post and The Times of London in 2001 which signaled that the Administration was considering the use of torture, the Cardinal calls current Administration dismay at the revelations a "hypocrisy."
