Italian cardinal opposes gay-art exhibit

Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe of Naples has spoken out against plans for an art exhibit with a homosexual theme.

Naples, Jul. 17, 2007 (CWNews.com) - The Italian daily Corriere della Sera reports that Cardinal Sepe staked out his opposition to the showing, which is scheduled to run from August 2 through November 30 in Naples. "I hope that respect prevails," the cardinal said, "because to be authentic, art must also be respectful of others."

Cardinal Sepe made his comment shortly after the sponsors of a controversial show in Milan announced that they were canceling their exhibit rather than submitting to the demands of that city's mayor, who had said that several works should be removed from the exhibit to avoid giving offense to Catholics.
