English Card. Sepe new archbishop of Naples
Jun 24, 2006
Benedict XVI has nominated Card. Crescenzio Sepe as the new archbishop of Naples to replace card. Michele Giordano who has resigned at 75 years-of-age.

(AGI) - Vatican City, May 20 - Since 2001 he has been Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, after having coordinate the 2000 Jubilee, gaining the esteem of John Paul II as organiser and criticisms in Vatican circles for his pragmatism which for some bordered on business-mindedness. Card. Sepe was born 2 June 1943 at Corinaro, in the Province of Naples and the diocese of Aversa. He was trained at various seminaries in Aversa, Salerno, and Rome at the Pontifical Seminary. A graduate in theology, canonical law and philosophy from Rome's La Sapienza university, he then taught at Urbaniana and Lateranense universities and is the author of theological publications. He was ordained as a priest in 1967, a bishop and archibishop in 1992, and worked in the Holy See's diplomatic service in Brazil and at the State Secretariat. He joined the diplomatic service in 1972, he became Pontifical Representative to Brazil. Her under the guidance of Apostolic Nuncios Mozzoni and Rocco, he worked not just for the Church, but also for the latter. He preferred working with the poor in the shanty town of Guaradois 20 km from Brasilia. From 1972 to 1975 in Brazil; then at the State Secretariat - called as a Substitute, Archbishop Giovanni Benelli - where he worked in the first international section, following in particular international bodies, such as Unesco. An excellent organiser he worked in the general affairs office, the press office and the state secretariat under the last Pope. He organised the 50th anniversary celebration of John Paul II's ordination. Then he showed his strength as general secretary of the central committee for the Holy Year. Made a bishop in February 2001 he became deacon of "God the Merciful Father", a church built for the Jubilee. His move to Naples was certainly not a punishment, being one of the main archdiocese in the country. Anyway the Pope's decision to bring him into the Curia says that the Pope's intention is something else. (AGI) .
