English Vatican Cardinal Pays Pastoral Visit to Express Solidarity
Feb 28, 2006
The prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe is winding up a week-long pastoral visit to the country.

Catholic Information Service for Africa (Nairobi, February 23, 2006) The February 17 to 24 visit covers the dioceses of Khartoum, Juba, Rumbek, and Wau.

In a meeting with the bishops of Sudan, Cardinal Sepe told them he had come with a message of solidarity and concern from Pope Benedict XVI and the whole Church with regard to the difficulties of their pastoral ministry.

"I want to assure you that the Holy Father is following with particular attention all that is happening and continues to pray for your country, which has suffered a serious regression in the various aspects of life because of hatred, war and religious extremism. Yes, the whole Church is with you and supports you in faith and in charity".

On February 18, he celebrated mass at St Paul's Major Seminary. "The voice which asked the disciples, on the mountain to listen to Jesus, is today directed to you and earnestly inviting you to be docile to this very Son who is training and preparing his disciples through the delicate task of the formation team," Cardinal Sepe told the seminarians.

Thereafter, he held a brief meeting with seminarians and the staff of the seminary.

Afterwards, accompanied by his host Cardinal Zubeir Wako, Cardinal Sepe visited two centres for the displaced at Wad Rambli and Jabarona.

The cardinal later met catechists and members of Catholic lay associations. On Sunday, February 19, he met priests, religious congregations and lay committed people.
